BREITKREUZ’S ANTI-BULLYING BILL NOW IN DRAFTING STAGE
“This bill will plug the holes some bullies have been slipping through.”

OTTAWA – Garry Breitkreuz, M.P. for Yorkton-Melville, expects to introduce his Anti-Bullying Bill in Parliament during the upcoming fall session of Parliament. His Private Member’s Bill will be comprised of seven proposed legislative amendments – one to add the offence of bullying to the Criminal Code of Canada and six key improvements to the Youth Criminal Justice Act (see link below for details).

“Bullying is a complex issue that can’t be solved by legislation alone. However, I have decided that the deficiencies identified in a report prepared by Retired RCMP Staff-Sgt. George Anderson and confirmed in a legal analysis by the Library of Parliament Research Branch need to be addressed,” asserted Breitkreuz.

“There is no doubt that community-based programs like the Buddies Program in the Kelvington/Lintlaw area and local bylaws have an important role to play in effectively addressing the bullying problem,” commended Breitkreuz. “But they also need federal legislation that supports them when local initiatives aren’t working. My Anti-Bullying Bill will plug the holes where some bullies have been slipping through the cracks in the system over and over again.”
