For Immediate Release

FISHING LAKE DECLARED EMERGENCY AREA

Garry Breitkreuz, Member of Parliament for Yorkton-Melville, today issued the following statement:

With increasing concerns for safety, the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Loyola Hearn, has declared Fishing Lake an emergency area. This designation will now allow for emergency draining of the lake to take place.

Dealing with situations like this can be complex due to the number of different organizations involved, each one with its different perspectives.

However, a federal government must always work first and foremost to protect its citizens, and this concern for public safety is what triggered the Minister's decision today.

Officials from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans will continue to monitor the situation in the days ahead, and will continue to make decisions in the best interests of safety and the environment.
