For Immediate Release

Federal programs provide $12.5 million to Yorkton-Melville

Several local projects approved for infrastructure funding

Yorkton-Melville – Several infrastructure projects in Yorkton-Melville and across Saskatchewan have received the green light for federal-provincial funding.

The Communities Component of the Building Canada Fund recognizes that smaller communities have unique infrastructure needs, and targets projects in communities with populations of less than 100,000. Projects are selected through an application-based process and those not chosen in this round of funding will be considered for the next round.

“The federal government believes in investing in improving water and sewer facilities, and roads and highways,” says Yorkton-Melville MP Garry Breitkreuz. “We are injecting additional capital into our economy to help keep people working during these tough economic times and improving Saskatchewan’s infrastructure at the same time. The total federal-provincial allocation for this round in Yorkton–Melville is more than $27 million. This infrastructure contributes to our quality of life and will boost our regional economy now and for years to come.”

The federal share of the Yorkton-Melville Building Canada projects includes:

  • Kamsack: sewage lagoon expansion - $409,416
  • Lintlaw: parkland regional waste management landfill - $62,000
  • Porcupine Plain: Water distribution and sewage upgrades – $94,625

The Infrastructure Stimulus Fund provides funding to provincial, territorial and municipal construction-ready infrastructure rehabilitation projects that will be built during this year’s and next year’s construction seasons.

The Infrastructure Stimulus Fund is already at work in Saskatchewan. On May 26, 2009, the Governments of Canada and of Saskatchewan announced that 61 shovel-ready infrastructure projects will receive a joint federal-provincial investment of $160.2 million ($89.2 million federal, $71.0 million provincial) million under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.

The federal share of the Yorkton-Melville Infrastructure Stimulus Fund includes:

  • RM of Porcupine: Peggs Bridge at McKillop Creek - $116,667
  • RM of Porcupine: Hintz Bridge at Prairie River - $116,667
  • RM of Porcupine: East Central Haul Road Bridge at McKillop Creek - $116,667
  • RM of Livingston: Swan River Bridge - $500,000
  • Highway 16 from Springside to Insinger - $4,200,000
  • Highway 49 east of Lintlaw to east of Kelvington – $3,900,000
  • Highway 49 from Highway 35 to Kelvington - $3,000,000

Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the federal government is prepared to accelerate the remaining Provincial-Territorial Base Funding for infrastructure. The action plan includes up to $1 billion in accelerated payments under Building Canada’s Provincial-Territorial Base Fund to expedite “ready-to-go” infrastructure initiatives.
