BREITKREUZ MAKES STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF ISRAEL

(OTTAWA) – Today, in the House of Commons, Yorkton-Melville, Member of Parliament, Garry Breitkreuz made the following statement:

“I rise today to condemn the events taking place to mark the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Durban Declaration. This event will be used as a platform to single out and demonize Israel and it will be used to spread anti-Semitic views to a global audience.

I am proud that Canada was the first nation to withdraw from Durban II and that Canada is joining 13 other democracies in not participating in the Durban III hate-fest. That is why Minister Kenney is speaking at the “Perils of Global Intolerance” conference in New York this afternoon - to make our Government’s position clear to the world.

Canada is committed to the fight against racism.  That is why Canada does not, and will not, support the Durban III charade, whose agenda has been usurped by some who seek to promote racism rather than combat it.

The Durban Declaration adopted in 2001 by the General Assembly of the United Nations was created as a blueprint to fight racism and racial discrimination globally.  In 2009, many countries, including Canada, boycotted the meeting for the review of the Declaration as it became a platform for the promotion of anti-Semitism.

“Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East and Canada will not lend its name and reputation to an international conference that promotes expressions of intolerance and anti-Semitism.  I am proud to be a supporter of Israel and proud that Canada will not condone the views to be expressed at Durban III,” Breitkreuz concluded.
