ALLOWING PRIVATE ABORTION CLINICS BUT NOT HEART CLINICS IS HYPOCRISY

"Why is charging user-fees for abortions in some provinces and two-tier abortion clinics in others never questioned by the Liberals?"

Ottawa - Today in the House of Commons, Garry Breitkreuz, M.P. for Yorkton-Melville, exposed the Liberal’s hypocritical position in the health care debate. "Health Minister Allan Rock and the Prime Minister ignore the truth about the existence of two-tier Medicare in Canada and are deliberately misleading Canadians," accused Breitkreuz. "Two-tier Medicare is everywhere, but nowhere is it more evident than in funding of public and private abortuaries."

Here’s the text of the statement Breitkreuz delivered in the House today:

The Liberals and the NDP are wailing and wringing their hands over Alberta’s Bill 11. Terms like two-tier Medicare and private clinics are used as if that is something strictly forbidden in Canada – just like it is in Cuba and North Korea. It’s strange that only certain provinces and sectors of the health care system are targeted by the socialists for this criticism. Two years ago, the Globe reported that 21 special private clinics are operating in Canada. In most provinces these clinics are even funded by the taxpayer – except in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Manitoba where clients were charged three to five hundred dollars. No one said a word about these clinics nor anything about these provinces violating the Canada Health Act. We have a government that allows privatization of health clinics that provide abortions but not private health clinics that provide medically necessary heart surgery. This is an obvious double standard. The dictionary defines a standard that applies to others but not to oneself as hypocrisy!

While one is pro-abortion and one is pro-life, both Dr. Henry Morgentaler and MP Breitkreuz agree that the funding of abortion clinics is not a consistent policy or interpretation of the Canada Health Act. Last week the media reported that Dr. Henry Morgentaler wrote to Health Minister Allan Rock complaining about the refusal of some provinces to pay for abortions in his clinics. Morgentaler contends the unequal treatment is a violation of the Canada Health Act. "But what about the special status of private abortion clinics compared to other health services such as eye surgery, hernia treatment and MRI’s?" asked Breitkreuz.

"If the Liberals don’t think it’s a violation to allow private abortion clinics to charge women a user-fee of hundred’s of dollars for an abortion, then why are they opposed to other private health clinics charging user fees and private clinics providing other health services paid for with public funds?" asked Breitkreuz. "I will continue my fight for the defunding of abortions and to defend the rights of the unborn. Members of the public who are as concerned about this life and death issue as I am, should urge their Member of Parliament to support my motion M-360 which would amend the definition of a human being in the Criminal Code."
