Dear Editor:

Re: JUSTICE MINISTER’S REPLY DESERVES A REBUTTAL

With all due respect, it is Justice Minister Anne McLellan who still doesn’t get it ("Justice Minister offers reply" – Page A6, November 17, 1998). Here we have the Minister advertising a sale on gun registrations. Avoid the rush. Do it now. Buy a piece of paper from the government so that you don’t become a ‘Made-In-Ottawa’ criminal in 2003. Doesn’t Anne McLellan see how absolutely absurd it is for her to be spending millions of your tax dollars advertising the Criminal Code to more than five million responsible firearm owners who have never been and never will be in trouble with the law?

Can’t you just imagine what the real criminals are saying to each other as they listen to these government ads? "Hey Rocko, get a load of what the government is doing now. Ha, ha, ha, do they really think forcing millions of hunters to register their guns is going to do anything to stop us from getting guns and using them? Our sawed-off shotguns are already prohibited and our handguns have never been registered. Sure is great to see the government waste all that police time and a billion dollars chasing duck hunters and not us, eh? Where do you want me to put this case of AK47s that we just smuggled in from China?"

Saskatchewan farmers are facing the biggest net income crisis in their lives. Now, they have to see their government wasting their hard earned tax dollars on propaganda. Propaganda that tells them the government is going to force them to spend even more money (which they don’t have) to register some of their farm equipment (firearms) just to keep from becoming criminals under an ridiculous law passed to satisfy a few anti-gun fanatics in downtown Toronto and Montreal. No wonder western farmers are telling me they’re not going to take it any more!

If any of your readers are interested in reading the truth about gun control and Bill C-68, I’ve drafted a three-page rebuttal to all the inaccuracies in the Minister’s reply. Saskatchewan residents can call my Yorkton office toll free at 1-800-667-6606.

Sincerely,

Garry Breitkreuz, MP
