Québec is renowned for its wealth of wildlife and natural heritage.

This vast territory of over 1,700,000 square kilometres boasts more than a million lakes and waterways, a diversity of wild fauna and flora, thousands of kilometres of hiking trails, and much more. It is a ready-to-enjoy nature lover’s paradise that draws over three million Québec enthusiasts and thousands of foreign visitors every year to enjoy wildlife and nature activities.

Wildlife and nature in Québec account for billions of dollars in economic activity. Enthusiasts spend $3 billion generating $1.5 billion in added value. This expenditure also helps create and maintain 32,000 jobs throughout Québec. Wildlife and nature in Québec is all this… and much more!

The following documents provide a clear and realistic picture of recreational wildlife and nature use from a regional perspective.

Sport fishing: promising markets for Québec companies

Québec households with at least one fishing enthusiast spend $345.6 million every year on equipment related to sport fishing.  Of this amount, over 206 million (60%) is spent on imported goods.  A market that could be of considerable interest to Québec companies.

Québec is home to 813,590 fishing enthusiasts who spend over $1 billion a year on recreational fishing.  Sport fishing enthusiasts devote nearly 11.4 million days a year to fishing activities, which works out to an average of 14 days per enthusiast.

Imagine the impact… if the 1.6 million Quebecers who say they would like to try sport fishing one day actually do…

Abitibi-Témiscamingue: 772,937 days, 6.8%

Capitale-Nationale: 928,450 days, 8.1%

Laurentides: 962,209 days, 8.4%

Montérégie: 2,060,441 days, 18.0%

Montréal: 1,215,060 days, 10.6%

15 to 24 years -- 7.6%

25 to 34 years -- 13.3%

Québec anglers between the ages of 15 and 34 are half as numerous as enthusiasts aged 35 to 54.  While they make up 33% of the population aged 15 and over, they constitute only 21% of fishing enthusiasts.  Fishing enthusiasts aged 35 to 54 make up more than half of Québec anglers.

The number of young people between the ages of 15 and 24 who say they would like to try sport fishing at some point is almost three times higher than the number of actual anglers in this age group.

Québec sport fishing enthusiasts spend over $1 billion a year, helping to create or maintain 9754 jobs, pay out $245.8 million in job income, and generate $457.9 million in added value.

Over 246,000 and Québec households with at least one fishing enthusiast spend $1.08 billion on equipment.  Of this amount, $630.3 million is devoted specifically to sport fishing.  In addition to purchasing equipment, Québec households with at least one fishing enthusiasts spend $417.3 million on trip expenditures for fishing, including $64.2 million on fishing packages.

In Québec, the nearly 245,000 households with at least one fishing enthusiast on a total of 357,000 boats of various types, which they use for a total of 7.8 million days a year for a range of recreational like to the days, although primarily for fishing (56%).

43% of the boats owned by these households are used for over 15 years, and nearly one quarter is still in use after 20 years.  Many of these boats will need to be repaired or replaced in the short or medium-term.

Sport Hunting: $308 million Annually in Expenditures

Sport hunting attracts 408,000 Quebecers for many reasons -- recreation, the element of challenge, and sheer enjoyment, to name a few.  But whatever their reason, the $308 million in Québec's sport hunters spend every year on their sport and the consumption of related goods and services helps drive local economies across the province.

Over 700,000 Quebecers -- 12% of the population -- say they are interested in hunting.

Where 311,355 hunting enthusiasts and potential hunters are concentrated.  In relative terms, over 44% of Quebecers who expressed an interest in hunting live in these urban regions.

If every potential new hunter took up the sport, expenditures would rise by nearly 75%.

Québec's 408,000 and enthusiasts devote nearly 6 million days a year to hunting, or an average of 14.5 days per hunter.

The largest proportion of hunting enthusiasts is in the 25 to 54 year age group, which accounts for 71% of Québec hunters.  Hunting enthusiasts between the ages of 15 and 24 number only just over 57,000.  Half the potential hunting clientele is under the age of 35.  Hunting attracts roughly four times more men than women.  And take enthusiast spend $308 million a year, which helps create or maintain 3,322 jobs, pay out A.D. $7.3 million in job income, and generate $150.3 million in added value.  Their expenditures earn $46 million and $37 million respectively in income for the Québec and Canadian governments.

Outdoor activities: $1.3 billion annually in expenditures

Outdoor activities are the most popular of all wildlife and nature related activities in Québec, which counts 2.4 million and outdoor enthusiasts.  Québec's outdoor enthusiasts spend nearly $1.3 billion a year on hiking, camping, canoeing, kayaking, snowmobiling, and many other outdoor activities.

In 12 regions, over half the population part takes in outdoor activities in their home regions.  All seven resource regions make the list:

Outdoor enthusiasts devote a total of 36.4 million days annually to recreational activities, which works out to an average of 15.5 days per person.

Annual expenditures of $1.3 billion by outdoor enthusiasts helps create or maintain 16,656 jobs and pay out $396 million in job income.  In addition to interacting $700 million in added value into Québec's economy, outdoor enthusiasts generate $226 million and $180 million respectively in income for the Québec and Canadian governments.

Average annual expenditure per outdoor enthusiast is $540.

Outdoor enthusiasts in each of these six regions spend over $80 million on other outdoor activities, for a total of $851.9 million or over two thirds of all expenditures on outdoor activities.

Network of wildlife territory managers: expenditures of nearly $150 million

The social and economic contribution of the network of wildlife territory managers has a significant impact on Québec's regions.  There are operating expenses in the order of $249.5 million provided valuable boost to regional economies.

The term “managers” is used here to refer to organizations and associations authorized by the government of Québec to develop wildlife and recreational activities

Expenditures by the network of wildlife territory managers across Québec create significant spinoffs for the regions:

Parks -- $25.0 million, 17%

Wildlife reserves -- $13.6 million, 9%

ZECs -- $19.1 million, 13%

Outfitters -- $91.8 million, 61%

The Côte-Nord, Laurentides, Mauricie, Nord-du-Québec, and Outaouais regions account for 60% of all operating expenses, injecting $89.4 million into the economy.  The wildlife territory managers in Québec's resource regions contribute to Québec's economy by injecting $96.7 million (65%) of all operating expenses.
