BREITKREUZ ATI REQUEST – November 4, 2002

For the period from December 1, 1998 to present, please provide copies of the most current reports showing the total number of firearms turned in to police and the government for destruction.  Please include copies of records showing procedures police must follow from the time they take firearms into their possession up to the destruction of the firearms, and copies of records showing the total number of firearms that have been destroyed and removed from the Canadian Firearms Registry.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT RESPONSE – November 28, 2002

“The Public Agency Regulations are not yet in full effect, therefore not all agencies are reporting all cases of destruction.  The total number of firearms reported and confirmed on our Canadian Firearms Registration System and our Restricted Weapons Registration System as destroyed as of Nov. 6, 2002: 40,008.  There are also 1,713 administrative files, which contain possible multiple firearms awaiting confirmation of destruction.  All public agencies must follow the Public Agency Regulations Sec. 10 and 16 on Protected Firearms and Disposal of firearms (copies attached).”
